WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers and congressional witnesses are criticizing the response of the Army Corps of Engineers to devastating flooding along the Missouri River in 2011. They also say they're concerned existing problems won't be corrected.
At a House subcommittee hearing Wednesday reviewing the response to flooding along the Missouri, lawmakers and witnesses recounted devastating flooding earlier this year.
Rep. Leonard Boswell, an Iowa Democrat, says the flooding along the Missouri was "an event that requires us to change our policies." Rep. Kristi Noem, a South Dakota Republican, says she blames the Corps of Engineers at least in part for the severity of the flooding.
Brigadier Gen. John McMahon, speaking on behalf of the corps, says it understands the impact. He says the agency will continue to examine its policies.
