Ellsworth Air Force Base may not be losing B-1B Lancer bombers if the U.S. House of Representatives has its way.

The House on Friday passed an amendment preventing any cuts to the B-1 fleet this year. The amendment was co-sponsored by Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D. It passed the House 336-87.

President Barack Obama's budget proposal for next year eliminated six B-1 bombers from the Air Force's fleet. Two of those B-1s were expected to be based at Ellsworth, with a potential loss of 100 jobs and millions of dollars in funding.

The amended defense funding bill will now move to the Senate, where the provision could be removed. Some senators have also been promoting other provisions aimed at protecting the B-1 fleet.
